Medical Abortion

Medical abortion is a safe and common treatment in which a pregnancy is ended using medication. The treatment takes place in two steps and causes the uterus to empty. The process often feels similar to a heavy menstrual period.

Your treatment

You have taken the tablet Mifegyne 200 mg in the clinic. This medication stops the pregnancy from developing. Light bleeding may occur after taking Mifegyne.

You have also been given:

Pain relief: Naproxen 500 mg – 1 tablet, and Pamol/Panodil 500 mg – 2 tablets
Medication to make the uterus contract: Cytotec 0.2 mg – 2 tablets

24–48 hours after taking Mifegyne, take the pain medication provided and insert the 2 Cytotec tablets into the vagina. We recommend lying down for approximately 1 hour.

What can you expect?

After taking Cytotec, you may experience:

• vaginal bleeding, including blood clots and pregnancy tissue
• period-like pain or cramping, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea

Bleeding usually starts within a few hours after Cytotec. It is often heaviest during the first few hours and then gradually becomes lighter.

Most women pass the pregnancy tissue the same day or within the first 24 hours.

It is normal if small tablet remnants come out.

We recommend that you do not stay home alone during the abortion.

Pain relief

If you continue to have pain, you may take:

Pamol/Panodil (paracetamol) 1 g (2 tablets of 500 mg) up to 4 times daily as needed.

Avoid additional ibuprofen for 8–12 hours after taking Naproxen.

When should you contact us?

Contact the clinic or 1813 if you:

• bleed heavily (more than 2 large sanitary pads per hour for more than 2 hours)
• have severe pain despite pain medication
• develop a fever above 38°C or have foul-smelling vaginal discharge
• feel dizzy or generally unwell

If bleeding does not start after treatment, please contact the clinic.

In an emergency, call 112.

Follow-up

You will be offered a follow-up ultrasound scan in the clinic 1-2 weeks after treatment to make sure the pregnancy has ended.

In a small number of cases, the treatment does not work completely the first time. If this happens, we will discuss further treatment options with you.

You should not travel away before your follow-up appointment has taken place.

After the treatment

Bleeding usually lasts 1–2 weeks, but light spotting may continue for several weeks.

We recommend that you:

• use sanitary pads while you are bleeding
• avoid baths, swimming pools, and swimming in the sea while bleeding
• avoid sexual intercourse while bleeding – or use a condom

You may return to your normal daily activities as you feel able to.

Your menstrual period usually returns after 4–6 weeks.
